“My soul has two supports: God and motherland.” The hero of Artsakh, Major Davit Arushanyan, often liked to repeat these words of Garegin Nzhdeh.
In 2006, he was admitted to the Military University named after Vazgen Sargsyan. In 2010, he graduated and was sent to the currently occupied Republic of Artsakh. He served in Ivanyan, in the tank military unit.
“He served there until the end, 12 years. As a child, he used to watch soldiers’ exercises and that was how his love for military work arose in him. At first I was against it, but I saw that he was going, and studying there in those years was even an honor,” his mother, Lida Arushanyan said, in the framework of “Immortal Victims of the Artsakh War” series of Iravaban.net.
Mrs. Lida brought her only son to Armenia on foot from Shahumyan region in 1992.
“I always told about that life, he even remembered some things and always said: Mom, maybe we will be liberated, do not be discouraged. He was sent to “Yeghniks” several times. He called from there and said, “Mom, your homeland is visible, You can stretch hand and touch it.” He was dedicated to his soldiers,” his mother says.
The father of 4 children did not hesitate for a second and even when he was wounded, he fought heroically until his last breath and inflicted many casualties on the enemy.
“During the attack on Arega mountain, he received an order to retreat, but he did not obey the retreat, he did not obey and stayed. He said there is no place to retreat, Artsakh is behind,” Mrs. Lida says.
Major Davit Nikolay Arushanyan went into battle on his Infantry fighting vehicle (IFV) and hit more than 4 enemy armored vehicles and a large amount of manpower. His combat vehicle was hit and he was injured, but the hero of Artsakh did not panic. He got out of the broken IFV, got into another IFV and continued the battle until the last shell. The ammunition of that IFV ran out, but he did not leave the battlefield, he got into the 3rd IFV and continued the battle, running into the enemy’s manpower. He died.
“The Turks captured my child’s body and then returned it. They told me in the army that as a sign of respect, the Turks brought him wrapped in a white sheet. We took him to Yerablur on 14 May, 2021,” Lida Arushanyan said.
