As a result of the military operations unleashed by Azerbaijan against the Republic of Armenia in 2022, hundreds of servicemen were killed, one of whom was Gor Hambardzumyan. Seeing the example of the boys who died in the 44-day war of 2020, Gor fought until his last breath.
His mother recounts that her son was always patriotic, thinking wiser and more maturely than his age. In 2020, he tried to volunteer and go to the front, but he was too young.
Gor Hambardzumyan’s mother, Anzhela Chilingaryan, says that everyone always gave much love to her eldest son. Gor had chosen the profession of a psychologist, and his mother notes that it very much suited his character. He and his brother had plans to open a clinic together.
On March 3, 2021, Gor departed for his much-anticipated military service.
“The boys say that he was a peace dove, he never argued. He was serving in Kapan. After five months, he went up to the positions. He served in the reconnaissance company, they loved him very much there. After the war, when friends visited us, they noted that Gor stood out in the army with his beauty, neatness, and intelligence. After going up to the positions, he loved the service even more; he really loved the plane tree grove of Nerkin Hand, always saying it was paradise, you must see it, there is no such place in the world. During his service, Gor was awarded twice and was a position commander. He always told the boys that if they were tired or wanted to sleep, they should let him know, he would do everything, make coffee, replace them. He said, ‘please don’t sleep, our homeland is at our back.’ He was very caring toward the boys,” the mother recounts and urges the commanding staff: keep our boys like the apple of your eye, let them reach their mothers.
During the combat operations, thanks to Gor, the lives of 22 new recruits were saved.
“Nine people became immortal at the positions. Gor, his friend, and 22 new recruits were at the positions. He didn’t let those boys go down alone; he was well-acquainted with that area. During the military operations, when the order was given to retreat, Gor showed the boys the way, saying, ‘I will protect your back, go down.’ The enemy approached, said they had captured the position, to put down their weapons, but Gor refused, saying, ‘shoot me here, but I will not go down,'” the mother recounts.
The father, Vardan Hambardzumyan, says that his son was killed by a gunshot wound, and according to the forensic examination, he received several shots from close range. The enemy took the bodies of Gor and two other servicemen to occupied Shushi. As a result of negotiations, there was an exchange of bodies. The father notes that there were no signs of torture.
“During the exchange, the Azerbaijani commander put bullets with the bodies and said, ‘These boys are heroes, we know how they fought,'” says the father.
The parents of Gor, who considered the positions his home, note that their son should be duly appreciated for his struggle for the sake of the homeland.
