“‘We’re crushing it, dad’: Son spoke with father one hour before his death”

Narek Baghdasaryan was a student at Yerevan State University’s Faculty of Informatics and Applied Mathematics. The young man dreamed of becoming a programmer, but it was time to fulfill his “duty” to his homeland.

“He was an excellent student in school, and graduated with honors. He won 2nd place in the Mathematics Olympiad and was a Category 2 chess player,” Artyom Baghdasaryan, his father, told Iravaban.net as part of their series “Immortal Victims of the Artsakh War.”

Narek studied at the TUMO Center for Creative Technologies for three years. His created game won an award, which he received posthumously. His mother shares that he knew about the award and was eagerly awaiting it.

“When the war began, he had only served for one month and was doing calculations for the grenade launcher. He called every day, always saying he was fine, that he was in the bunker. I thought since he was only a one-month serviceman, they wouldn’t take him to the battlefield. From September 28, he was in the hottest combat zones – the Tsori military unit suffered many casualties. He spoke with such courage that I thought it would be impossible for someone who had seen death in battle to speak that way,” says Artyom Baghdasaryan.

Narek fought until the end and fell on November 8, 2020.

“He called one hour before his death and said ‘We’re crushing it, dad.’ I asked, ‘Who gave you sunflower seeds?’ He was still cheerful and upbeat. Then he spoke with his mother, but she heard an explosion and quickly hung up the phone,” the father recounted.
