Linda Thomas-Greenfield, the US Representative in the UN Security Council, emphasized the importance of deploying an international mission to guarantee the protection of the rights and security of the Armenians of Nagorno-Karabakh. Linda Thomas-Greenfield mentioned this at the session of the UN Security Council on Azerbaijan’s military operations against Nagorno-Karabakh.
“The USA is concerned about the situation in Nagorno-Karabakh, which is due to the fact that Azerbaijan continues military operations. We call for an immediate end to these actions,” US Representative Linda Thomas-Greenfield said.
The US takes note of the announcements that hostilities have been suspended. The US representative emphasized that if this is confirmed, this will be a positive development. “However, at the moment the situation on the ground remains difficult. And we are deeply concerned about reports of violence against civilians. To be clear, Azerbaijan bears the responsibility to ensure that the actions of its armed forces fully comply with the norms of international law, including the norms of international humanitarian law relating to the conduct of hostilities, the protection of civilians and the humane treatment of combatants.
The United States calls on the parties to ensure that humanitarian organizations can deliver food, medicine and other essential supplies without any roadblocks and to ensure the safety of humanitarian workers.
“The people of Nagorno-Karabakh have looked up to us in this time of need,” said the US representative, presenting that the US has provided more than $24 million in humanitarian and development aid since 2020 in response to the crisis.
“But let’s be clear, the only solution to the crisis is through an end to the violence and lasting peace as the parties work to de-escalate the situation. We reaffirm how important the international mission will be, which will inspire confidence in the people of Nagorno-Karabakh, that their rights and security will be protected in accordance with Azerbaijan’s public statements,” he said.
The US Representative also assured that the US continues to work with the leaders of Armenia and Azerbaijan at the highest levels, striving to achieve a stable solution to the situation in Nagorno-Karabakh.
