Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, despite all the difficulties, showed political wisdom when they decided to stop the bloodshed in Karabakh. This was announced on Thursday by Russian President Vladimir Putin, speaking at a meeting at “Valdai” Discussion Club, “TASS” News Agency reports.
“First of all, I must express my respect for the political wisdom of both the President of Azerbaijan and the Prime Minister of Armenia. However, despite the tragedy of the events, they managed to get out of politics and make a very responsible decision. There are still important aspects, in particular, it is necessary to create conditions for long-term settlement in the region, these conditions can be created only if both parties accept the agreements reached as long-term. I want to emphasize the benefits of peaceful coexistence. “And this is in everyone’s interest,” Putin said.
“Firstly, I must express my respect to the political wisdom of both the President of Azerbaijan and the Prime Minister of Armenia. However, despite all the tragedy of the events, they managed to rise above the momentary political conjuncture and take a very responsible decision. Still, President Aliyev and Prime Minister Pashinyan managed to stop the bloodshed. But even this is not the only point, although there can be nothing more important than saving human lives. Nevertheless, there are still important aspects, and in particular, it is necessary to create conditions for a long-term settlement in the region, these conditions can be created only if both parties accept the agreements reached as long-term. I want to emphasize the benefits of peaceful coexistence. And this is in everyone’s interest,” Putin said.
“Armenia and Azerbaijan can resolve the border issue on the basis of maps of the Soviet period, but this process requires compromises,” he said.
“The most important thing now is to resolve the situation on the border. And here, of course, nothing can be done without the participation of Russia. Here, perhaps, even we do not need anyone else, except for the two sides and Russia. Why? Here are very simple, pragmatic things: Yes, because there are maps in the General Staff of the Russian army, which show how the border between the Union republics passed during the Soviet period. There are things here that also require mutual compromises. So that it is recognized, and it is clear that it is beneficial to both sides,” Putin said.
