Referring to the situation in the Caucasus region, CSTO Deputy Secretary General Valery Semerikov said that the situation in Nagorno Karabakh has generally stabilized since the adoption of a trilateral statement by the President of Azerbaijan, the Prime Minister of Armenia and the President of Russia on November 9, 2020.
“The presence of the Russian peacekeeping force and the current negotiation process strengthens the prospects for a lasting peace,” Valery Semerikov said.
At the same time, he noted that the recent escalation on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border requires immediate measures, first of all of a political-diplomatic nature. He said that the issue of demarcation of the state border between Armenia and Azerbaijan is needed.
Notably, today, on 25 May, the Defense Ministry informed that a contract soldier, junior sergeant V. Y. Khurshudyan (born in 1989) was fatally wounded as a result of a shootout started after the enemy opened fire in the Verin Shorzha border area of Gegharkunik region.
The Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Armenia expresses deep condolences to the family members, relatives and colleagues of the killed soldier.
The situation is under control at the moment, there is no shootings.
It should be reminded that on 12 May, some groups of servicemen of the Azerbaijani Armed Forces crossed the state border of Armenia and took actions to enclose Sev Lich (Black Lake). The Armenian Armed Forces carried out tactical countermeasures.
On 23 May, the Ministry of Defense reported that in the evening of 22 May, a part of the personnel of the Azerbaijani Armed Forces who had entered the territory of Armenia returned to the starting positions. The statement circulating in the press that “there are more than 1,000 Azerbaijani servicemen near Sev Lich (Black Lake) of Syunik region” does not correspond to reality.
