Jean-Marie Burguburu has been elected as the President of the Union Internationale des Avocats (UIA), the most longstanding international lawyers’ association.
Mr Burguburu took over the presidency from Driss Chater at the closing ceremony of the annual UIA Congress in Dresden on Saturday, reports Global Legal Post.
International commission
He has been a member of the Paris Bar since 1966, and was chairman from 2004 to 2005. Mr Burguburu is currently international counsel at the Paris office of New York-based Debevoise & Plimpton.
The new UIA President is also a member of the Conseil National des Barreaux (French Law Society) and is the vice president of its international commission.
The UIA – which aims to promote the basic principles of the legal profession – was created in 1927 and has several thousand individual members, as well as more than 200 bar associations from over 110 countries.
