Vagharshak Seryozha Galstyan participated in the war unleashed by Azerbaijan on September 27, 2020, as a volunteer.
His wife, Susanna Nazaryan, emphasizes when describing her husband that he was very patriotic and tried to raise his son the same way.
“The first thing he did as soon as he opened his eyes was to check the news about the situation in Armenia. On September 27, he woke up, was drinking his morning coffee, and saw that a war had begun. He left immediately that same day, and children from Artsakh were brought to our place. He came home, took a shower, and left again. He said, ‘I’ll be back soon, this will end soon, I’ll come back.’ At that moment, I was going to school, and he asked, ‘Aren’t you going to wait to say goodbye before you go?’ I said, ‘No, I don’t want you to go. If you’re going, I’m not saying goodbye to you.’ Every time I told him that he had already fulfilled his duty and should come back. He would say, ‘Isn’t it shameful? An 18-year-old soldier is standing with a weapon in his hands, and I should leave and come home?’ Until his last breath, he fought and saved many lives, but God did not save his life,” she recounts for Iravaban.net‘s “Immortal Victims of the Artsakh War” series.
According to Susanna, she spoke with her husband every day, with the last call being on the morning of October 29, 2020.
“Until the very last moment, I thought nothing would happen, that he would return. Even when he didn’t call that day, I didn’t think something had happened. I simply thought he wasn’t calling because of the war situation. He never spoke with our son, but on October 29, he did. He said he would be coming back in three days, but those 3 days turned into an entire lifetime, where we must wait for him forever,” says Susanna.
Vagharshak found himself encircled with friends in Hadrut. His combat comrades have recounted that he went alone to bring weapons, food, and cigarettes for the men.
“He was the one who got everyone out of the encirclement. They say that when they escaped the encirclement, Vagharshak sent everyone home who wasn’t married, saying, ‘I have a son who will continue my work; you go and start families.’ They say that at that moment, tears fell from his eyes; he understood he wouldn’t be returning. Then he went to ‘Martuni-2.’ Everyone there knew him as ‘Godfather Vagho.’ He encouraged everyone and said that everything would be fine and that he would be everyone’s godfather,” the mother recounts.
