Germany condemns Azerbaijan’s military attack on Nagorno-Karabakh and calls on Baku to permanently and definitively stop its military operations. According to “Armenpress”, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Federal Republic of Germany, Annalena Baerbock , announced at the UN Security Council during an urgent session on the large-scale attack of Azerbaijan on Nagorno-Karabakh.
The German Foreign Minister noted that too many people have already been killed in just two days. Thousands of people had to flee their homes.
“Azerbaijan has chosen the way to change the situation on the ground with military force. We firmly condemn Baku’s military attack and call on the latter to permanently and definitively stop its military operations. We took note of the information received about the ceasefire, but we need a complete cessation of violence. Azerbaijan bears the responsibility to completely and fully protect the civilian population, especially children, who live in Nagorno-Karabakh. Deportation and forced emigration of ethnic Armenians from Karabakh is unacceptable. Having said this, I would like to reaffirm several decisions made by this body in the past. The sovereignty and territorial integrity of both Armenia and Azerbaijan should not be questioned,” Burbok emphasized.
According to the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Germany, it is difficult to imagine the suffering and difficulty that the women, children and men living in Nagorno Karabakh have been suffering for months.
“Baku authorities have actually closed the Lachin Corridor and the shops are empty, medicine has run out, there is not enough electricity and gasoline. In recent weeks, together with many partners who are present here, we have worked tirelessly to ensure access to humanitarian services and aid for people in need, especially pregnant women, children and the elderly.
And as soon as a hint of hope appeared – humanitarian shipments were allowed to reach Nagorno-Karabakh, Baku again assured that it would refrain from the use of force, which was violated by it and caused enormous suffering to the population, which is already in a difficult situation,” Baerbock stressed.
The German Foreign Minister noted that the population of Nagorno-Karabakh deserves to live in security, that their rights are protected. According to her, keeping the Lachin Corridor open is of vital importance for humanitarian reasons, and it is also a cultural and humanitarian bridge for Armenians living in Karabakh.
“Baku and Karabakh Armenians should return to dialogue. This conflict, which started more than 30 years ago, has resulted in too many victims. Residents of the region need lasting peace between Armenia and Azerbaijan. We also need it, and it can be achieved at the negotiation table.
We will continue to make this clear to both parties. I call on the parties to return to the negotiations, the mediator of which is the European Union. Now is the time to release the tension.
I would like to emphasize that no country should use the current situation to destabilize Armenia’s democracy. Women, men and children in Nagorno-Karabakh and the residents of the region in general deserve to live without fear of violence, without fear of being forcibly removed from their homes, without fear of being deprived of their rights, language, and religion. They deserve to live in peace, like all of us,” the German Foreign Minister concluded.
