Samvel Gevorgyan, immortalized in the 44-Day Artsakh war, lived in the Russian Federation. He had returned to serve his homeland, he had a debt that he had to pay.
” he suffered from severe pneumonia before he was two years old, we did not hope that Samvel would survive, but he did. He learned very well at school, he listened to the teacher’s explanation, he didn’t open a book at home, but he always got high marks,” his mother, Hasmik Gevorgyan, says about her son.
In 2019, the future grandmaster leaves his favorite sport, chess, which was his life – his everyday life, and returns to his homeland, entering service in Matagis. He once told his mother that the guy serving in Mataghis is a king.
“There was a moment when he said: I have to go to my homeland to pay my debt. Nevertheless, my husband and I disagreed, he had decided and it should be his decision. He used to say, “What is two years, Mama, I’ll serve, and return.” During the service, he did not disturb us even once; we did not even feel how he served. There were two months left when the war began,” the mother says.
Hasmik Gevorgyan remembers that on 27 September, 2020, his son called her in the afternoon and happily shouted that he had captured an enemy tank. “Recently, I found out that the tank came close to the boys and they spoke in Armenian so as not to hit them. The commander did not allow the boys to approach, he said: I will approach, and then you, but Samvel saw that there was an Azerbaijani flag under the tank and shouted. The commander hit the one who came out of the tank; Samvel also jumped on the tank and hit the operator. The commander told that his comrade in arms died in Samvel’s arms. Samvel also swore that he would take revenge and captured that tank. They say that they were in the hottest spots, and Samvel mastered all the weapons.”
Mrs. Hasmik received the last call from Samvel on 6 October. She says that she felt something would happen to her son.
