Mrs. Silva Yengibaryan was forcibly displaced from the village of Noragyugh, of Askerani region of the occupied Artsakh Republic. She told in the framework of “Artsakh: Armenian Genocide 2023: Stories of Survivors” documentary project.
“I was returning home from school, I was talking on the phone with my daughter-in-law on the way, when the war started. They are in Yerevan. I cheated and said that the connections are bad. I turned it off. I cannot say how I felt,” Silva said about the war that was unleashed on 19 September.
She said that during the siege, they even tried to complete the lessons without missing anything, no matter how difficult it was. “We tried to provide the school with everything. We warned the children that whenever something happened, we should go into the basements. We did not think that something would happen. On the day of the start of the war, the administration succeeded to take the children down to the basement until noon, when the parents took the children from school. “Many of them stayed in the basement of the school, and not only the children, but also many from the neighboring areas came and stayed in the basement of the school for several days,” she said.
According to Silva, they traveled for two days and did not take anything with them. “We didn’t take anything with us, what could we take?” In addition we were told not to take anything valuable, who knows what the Turk, will do. We took a bag of winter clothes, as soon it would be winter. We were not stopped on the road, we lowered the windows, they looked into the car and didn’t say a word or anything. I do not know how it was with the rest, but we thought that there would be difficulties with men. Thank you God, it didn’t happen,” she said.
