Today is the day of commemoration of the genocide of the Assyrian people։ Member of Parliament

August 7, is the day of commemoration of the genocide of the Assyrian people. Member of the National Assembly Zemfira Mirzoeva wrote on her Facebook page.

“During the First World War, the Ottoman Empire began exterminating the Christian Assyrians, Armenians and Greeks.

More than 750,000 Assyrians became victims of the 1914-1923 genocide, which significantly affected the future development of the nation, maintaining an active cultural policy, as the massacre had significantly reduced the number of the Assyrian population.

The genocide of the Assyrians, Armenians and Greeks living in the Ottoman Empire is considered one of the greatest disasters of the 20th century.

All the Assyrian public organizations and the church decided to pay their respects to the memory of the innocent Assyrian victims on 7 August, because on 7 August, more than 5,000 Assyrians were brutally killed and deported in one day in the city of Semel in Northern Iraq.

Unfortunately, even after 1933, the Assyrians are subjected to white genocide in their historical homeland. Thus, in 2014, the terrorist group called the Islamic State began their black work of erasing Assyrian history.

It is very important for the international community to take steps to accept and recognize the genocide of the Assyrians, as well as the genocides of all Christian nations.

Only by condemning the crimes committed against humanity can we prevent new genocides.”
