According to the RA Law on the Social Support, social support is the supply of a person (family, other social group) with one or a more social services by the Republic of Armenia and/or by a community to prevent or overcome the difficult life situation pursuant to RA legislation.
Providing shelter is one of the measures of social support. According to the RA Law on the Social Support, providing shelter means to give a temporary residence to a group of people (families, aged people).
Thus, shelter is provided:
1. If the person lives in a temporary asylum or other places of public importance and hasn’t got any place, which is in his (family’s) ownership, the shelter is provided free for 10 years on contract basis, and then on lease, except for the cases, when the person (family) has alienated a flat in the course of five years preceding the deadline of his registration for receiving a shelter.
2. as a temporary asylum for 90 days to a person, who hasn’t got any place to live,
3. as a temporary asylum, for 12 months to persons who have been subjected to domestic violence.
In cases mentioned in the above 2nd and 3rd clauses they are provided:
1. in-kind assistance, such as food, hygiene accessories, clothing, shoes,
2.medical care and services,
3. social and psychological assistance,
4. advisory assistance,
5. Other adequate social services are organized if necessary in specialized institutions (general education, or specialized medical institution, etc.).
The terms and conditions of providing shelter are established by the Government of the Republic of Armenia.
