Today, after being postponed for the second time the Court session on Hayk Kyureghyan’s case took place, where the accused made his council’s address.
Judge Armen Bektashyan announced that despite the fact of applying a sanction against the accused, for contempt of court and he was removed from the courtroom, yet the court on its own initiative allows the defendant to participate in the session and make council’s address and the last plea.
Hayk Kyureghyan made his council’s address sitting in his place and the court did not refer to the fact this time.
First he said a few words about himself, saying that he is a non-partisan, ordinary citizen with technical education. Speaking about the reasons of his act he said that he had done this seeing the prevailing impunity in Armenia, when an oligarch can steal a man and beat him; the police can apply force against the citizens during the peaceful actions and stay unpunished. And under this conditions the only way out of this is applying abrupt measures and struggle openly.
The court interrupted him saying that his speech should concern the case. But Kyureghyan got angry saying that even the last plea is not allowed.
He continued his speech insisting that when the civilized methods of struggle are exhausted, it is necessary to “resolve the matter harshly, through the mob law.”
Referring to the prosecutor’s motion to apply a 14 years imprisonment he said, “You will not give 14 years, I shall not stay in prison for 14 years, because this regime will not last so long.”
After listening to the council’s address and last plea the court went to the retiring room to take a decision. The verdict will be announced on September 15.
Notably, this time the citizens that had come to support Kyuregyan and were shouting “Freedom to Hayk,” were not allowed entering the court building.
