On 2 April, the delegation led by the RA NA President Galust Sahakyan being on an official visit in the Republic of Cyprus met with the President of the Republic of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades.
In his speech Galust Sahakyan attached importance to the promotion of cooperation between the two countries in cultural, educational and scientific spheres. The Head of the RA NA mentioned that the Republic of Armenia attaches special importance to the development of economic ties, stressing that the existing economic indicators do not reflect the true potential of the Armenian-Cypriot cooperation. In this aspect Mr. Sahakyannoted the importance of implementation of new initiatives and pointed out the spheres of cooperation that would be prospective and profitable e.g. tourism and banking sectors.
Addressing the President of the Republic of Cyprus, the RA NA President stated that Armenia will continue its efforts aimed to achieve the recognition, condemnation and prevention of genocides. He informed that on 24 March at the meeting, the RA National Assembly unanimously adopted a statement condemning the genocide perpetrated by the Ottoman Empire against the Pontic Greeks and the Assyrians. The NA President highly appreciated activities of Cyprus, aimed at the prevention of genocide, genocide against the restoration of the rights of peoples and activities aimed at establishing the historical justice. He expressed his gratitude to the House of Representatives for passing the bill criminalizing denial of the Armenian genocide.
The President of Cyprus in his welcoming speech said that Cyprus has been and will always remain Armenia’s brotherly and friendly country and will apply all efforts to support the friendly country.
Nikos Anastasiadis confirmed his decision to participate in the events dedicated to 100th commemoration of Armenian Genocide.
President of the Republic of Cyprus in his speech said that being aware of Azerbaijan’s provocative actions, fully shares Armenia’s approach for the solution to the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict peacefully.
