RA NA voted in favor of ratifying the Rome Statute

Today, on 3 October, the National Assembly ratified the Rome Statute. 60 deputies voted in favor, 22 against.

Before the voting, Hayk Mamijanyan, Deputy of the “With Honor” Faction, spoke iaccording to the procedure of the sitting. He noted that the discussion of the issue itself contradicts the Constitution; it will not bring any benefit to Armenia, because neither Azerbaijan nor Turkey signed it. “Besides, neither the Russian Federation, nor China, nor the USA, even among the UN countries, have ratified or signed this statute.”

Artsvik Minasyan, deputy of the “Hayastan” Faction, also spoke in the order of procedure. “We believe that this draft is being presented using an unconstitutional procedure. We are against this draft, our faction will vote against it.”

Vladimir Vardanyan, deputy of the parliamentary majority, responded to the statements of the opposition. He mentioned that what happened in Artsakh is called a crime against humanity.

“A large group of our compatriots, being deprived of everything, ended up in the territory under the jurisdiction of the RA. This provides a basis to raise the issue in the UN International Criminal Court within the framework of this questioning,” Vardanyan noted, adding that the draft is in the interests of Armenia and the Armenian people.
