Today, on 28 January, Armenia celebrates the formation of the Armenian Army.

In 1992-1993, a mobile and disciplined army was created by the union of Yerkrapah Volunteer detachments and conscripts.

The process of formation of the Armenian Army started in February 1988, from the first days of the Artsakh movement, but was officially founded on 28 January, 1992.

On 5 December 1991, Vazgen Sargsyan was appointed the first Minister of Defense of the Republic of Armenia,

The Armed Forces of the Republic of Armenia were formed during a rather difficult period, when the Soviet Union was living in the last months of its existence in the geopolitical field, the period of collapse, and an inter-ethnic, territorial war between Armenians and Azeris had begun in the region. The formation and development of the Armed Forces took place in the following time phases:

The first stage, lasted from February 1988 to May 1992. During this period, in the conditions of Karabakh movement activation and extreme aggravation of the Armenian-Azerbaijani relations, ensuring the military security of the population of Armenia and Artsakh became more than urgent.

The second phase, lasted from June 1992 to May 1994. During this period, the republics of Armenia and Artsakh were targeted by the aggression of the Republic of Azerbaijan.

The third stage, which began in June 1994, continues to this day. During this period, considerable work was done to build the army, increase the combat readiness of the troops, strengthen discipline, train officers and non-commissioned officers, as well as contract personnel, and ensure some progress in the army-society relations.

In September 1990, the Yerevan Special Regiment was formed, and five battalions were formed in Ararat, Goris, Vardenis, Ijevan and Meghri. In 1991, by the decision of the Government of the Republic of Armenia, the State Committee of Defense under the Council of Ministers was established.

It should be noted that the RA Armed Forces consists of the RA Ministry of Defense, five army corps. The Ministry of Defense, in turn, consists of the administrative apparatus, intelligence, missile forces, artillery, aviation, military service, military service, air defense forces, strategic planning, combat training, rear, communication, automatic control systems, engineering troops, military, chemical, biological defense, mobilization, operative, personnel work, financial, personnel departments, radio-electronic combat, military communications, military information, eighth, standardization and metrological, military and detachment departments, military commissariat of the Republic of Armenia, etc., which perform the tasks of setting and planning, their implementation, control functions

The RA Armed Forces are composed of the following specialized troops:

• Ground troops,
• Air Force,
• Air defense troops.

The ground forces in turn consist of the following types of troops:

• Motorized rifle troops,
• Tank troops,
• Missile troops and artillery,
• Airborne troops,
• Engineering troops,
• Signal Corps.
