CSTO closely follows the development of the situation in Syunik region: Stanislav Zas

The Collective Security Treaty Organization closely follows the development of the situation in the border regions of the Syunik region of Armenia. The CSTO Secretary General Stanislav Zas announced.

He said that the situation was discussed in detail at the 19 May sitting of the CSTO Council of Foreign Ministers.

“We welcome the talks that have begun between the parties, mediated by Russia, as well as the agreement on the withdrawal of some of the units,” he said.

Zas noted that the deployment of Russian peacekeeping troops in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict zone and the continuation of the negotiation process have significantly improved the situation.

“We see the prospect of a lasting peace there. There are no more shootings there, but the situation is still tense,” Zas said.

It should be reminded that on 12 May, 2021, some groups of servicemen of the Azerbaijani Armed Forces crossed the state border of Armenia and carried out actions aimed at enclosing Sev Lich (Black Lake) in Syunik. The Armenian Armed Forces carried out tactical countermeasures. The Azeris stationed in some adjacent areas withdrew from the occupied territories as a result of tactical countermeasures by the Armenian armed forces. At the same time, groups of Azerbaijani servicemen continue to be inside the state borders of the Republic of Armenia, in some parts of Syunik and Gegharkunik regions. Negotiations are underway to resolve the situation.
