In 2014 and 2015 approximately 25 criminal cases were initiated based on the facts found in the connection with the crimes in the penitentiaries which were initiated with the help and support of the administrations of the penitentiaries. Today during the questions and answers session at the National Assembly of the RA mentioned the RA Prosecutor general Gevorg Kostanyan and added, “In this respect we have effectiveness,. I do not think that it is enough. Of course we have not been able to ensure enough effectiveness. We have a lot of problems in penitentiaries which among others require serious financial investment.”
From this aspect Mr. Kostanyan spoke about the restoration of “Armavir” penitentiary. “Now the load of penitentiary institutions will be rearranged, so that we shall not have cases of ill-treatment, due to calculations of square meters per person. I am not saying that we have no problem, we have a lot of problems,” the Prosecutor general said.
He also spoke about the crimes that took place in Syunik in which Governor Surik Khachatryan’s name was mentioned. The Prosecutor General said, “In connection with news publications and facts that are connected to Surik Khachatryan’s person. I have referred to the facts repeatedly. The person is not a matter for me. I realize that I am Prosecutor General, but I am a man as well. I realize that any crime that was committed could be committed against my relatives tomorrow, or against my person. And I cannot be tolerated. The problem here is that everyone, and altogether considers that this person is guilty. If the evidence is obtained I shall bring to court anyone whoever he is. So be sure, I do not have this problem.”
