“The EU is committed to helping Armenia and Azerbaijan reach a comprehensive normalization. We will continue to contribute to their joint efforts,” Charles Michel, the President of the European Council said.
In a conversation with journalists, Charles Michel said that the leaders of Armenia and Azerbaijan confirmed the recognition of mutual territorial integrity on the basis of the 1991 Alma-Ata declaration. “The leaders of Armenia and Azerbaijan confirmed their loyalty to the 1991 Alma-Ata Declaration, and also confirmed that they respect each other’s territorial integrity, in the case of Armenia, 29,800 sq. km, and in the case of Azerbaijan, 89,600 square km. The final delimitation of the borders will be agreed upon through negotiations.”
It is noteworthy that the internationally recognized territory of Azerbaijan is 86,600 square km.
Charles Michel also informed that the next meeting with the leaders of Azerbaijan and Armenia is scheduled for July in Brussels.
The President of the European Council called on Azerbaijan to ensure the safety and rights of the population of the former Nagorno-Karabakh autonomous region with joint efforts with the international community.
It should be noted that before the tripartite meeting, the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, had separate meetings with the leaders of Armenia and Azerbaijan.
