The United States has seen sufficient evidence that Azerbaijan is shelling inside Armenia and significant damage to Armenian infrastructure: US Department of State

The US has seen significant evidence of Azerbaijani shelling inside Armenia.

According to “Armenpress”, Ned Price United States Department of State spokesperson said at a press briefing that the United States has seen sufficient evidence that Azerbaijan is shelling inside Armenia and significant damage to Armenian infrastructure.

“Well, as we said in the readout of the Secretary’s calls that took place overnight, he urged President Aliyev to cease hostilities immediately, to disengage military forces, and to work to resolve all outstanding issues between Armenia and Azerbaijan through negotiations that are peaceful and diplomacy that is constructive. We have seen significant evidence of Azerbaijani shelling inside Armenia and significant damage to Armenian infrastructure, but most important for us is that both of these parties commit to a cessation of hostilities and commit to a broader de-escalation,” Price said.

Responding to the question of how the US relates to the fact that Armenia appealed to the CSTO to intervene in the conflict, the spokesperson of the State Department stated: “We have called on all countries in the region to use their influence and take constructive steps to achieve the cessation and de-escalation of hostilities. Of course, it is difficult to imagine how the involvement of foreign forces on one side of the conflict can serve that purpose, but again I must mention that our emphasis is on ending the violence.”

Let’s remind that on the night of 12-13 September, around 00:05, the armed forces of Azerbaijan launched an attack along the state border of the Republic of Armenia, undertaking military operations in the directions of Syunik, Vayots Dzor and Gegharkunik marzes. The RA Ministry of Defense reported that the positions located in the direction of Sotk, Vardenis, Goris, Kapan, Artanish and Ishkhanasar were shelled. Civilian infrastructures are also being hit. Intense operations continued throughout the night. According to preliminary data, the Armenian side has 49 victims. Spokesman of the RA Ministry of Defense Aram Torosyan said during the evening briefing that the situation in some parts of the Armenian-Azerbaijani border continues to be tense as of 18:00. According to Torosyan, the information about the losses of the Armenian side is being verified.
