98 out of 297 videos are related to torture and abuse of living prisoners: Human Rights Defender

Today, we have completed the analysis of 297 video materials and photos about Azerbaijani atrocities against the military and civilians of the Armenian side, as well as the destruction and desecration of the Armenian cultural, historical and religious heritage.

These videos and photos are in particular (addition: more than one video or photo may refer to the same person or monument)

  • 98 to torture of living prisoners of war and humiliation of their dignity.
  • 17 to beheading and murder.
  • 32 to the desecration of the bodies of the victims and the dismemberment of body parts (for example, cutting off an arm or ear).
  • 54 to managing the prisoners’ pages on social networks, including spreading hatred and posting a photo of a decapitated soldier on his own page.
  • 49 to the use of prohibited weapons of mass destruction, including those containing chemical elements, against settlements and forests of Artsakh.
  • 26 to the destruction and vandalism of the Armenian cultural, historical and religious heritage, including monuments and churches.
  • 12 to the pages of websites and social networks (Telegram, Instagram, etc.), through which videos or photographs of the atrocities of Azerbaijanis against Armenian prisoners of war, inciting hatred and enmity, were disseminated.
  • 9 to recruiting and involving mercenary terrorists to participate in war.

Videos have been translated into English, and some of them have already been translated into Russian at this stage. Almost all video materials, alive or dead people, have been identified.

The reliability of all video materials and photos is confirmed by the official logo of the RA Human Rights Defender.

The study of the collected video and photo materials shows that the torture, cruelty and inhuman treatment of Armenian prisoners of war by the Azerbaijani armed forces were motivated by ethnic hatred. In other words, they were committed only because the victims were Armenians.

The Armenian historical, cultural and religious heritage, including monuments and churches, was destroyed and vandalized on the same principle.

The Azerbaijani authorities must understand that they will not remain unpunished for the aforementioned gross violations of human rights, war crimes, systematic propaganda of Armenophobia (hatred towards Armenians) and the policy of genocide.

The study by the Human Rights Defender of Armenia and the results of the investigation of complaints continuously confirm that the Azerbaijani authorities, in gross violation of international humanitarian law and human rights requirements, are delaying the release of Armenian prisoners of war and their return to their homeland, deliberately hiding the number of prisoners.

With this policy, they not only violate the rights of the captives of the Armenian side illegally detained in Azerbaijan, but also cause mental suffering to them and the families of the missing, with the intention of contributing to the tension in the Armenian society.

All the mentioned video and photo materials will be sent to the relevant international structures, as well as to the state bodies of the RA, with the necessary descriptions.

The Office of the Human Rights Defender of the Republic of Armenia continues to collect and study evidence of the atrocities committed by Azerbaijanis.
