Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres on Thursday discussed by phone the possibilities of organizing in solving humanitarian problems in Nagorno-Karabakh in cooperation with Russian peacekeepers, Azerbaijan and Armenia.
“TASS” news agency reported.
“António Guterres welcomed Russia’s role in reaching agreement on the cessation of hostilities in Nagorno Karabakh. The two sides discussed the possibility of the United Nations system organizations to help address the humanitarian problems in the region in cooperation with Azerbaijan, Armenia and the Russian peacekeepers,” the statement of the Russian Foreign Ministry said.
Earlier, the official representative of the UN Secretary General Stéphane Dujarric said that the organization’s specialists are ready to work together with Russia to assess the volume of humanitarian assistance needed in Nagorno-Karabakh. Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said at a briefing on Thursday that the UN Integrated Assessment Mission is preparing to head to the region.
On 9 November, the leaders of the Russian Federation, Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a joint statement on the complete cessation of hostilities in Nagorno-Karabakh. The document provides for the deployment of Russian peacekeepers in the region. On 13 November, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree on the establishment of an interdepartmental humanitarian response center for Nagorno-Karabakh.
