March 1: Tribute to the Victims of the Tragic Events

Today, at 18:30, the march to commemorate the victims of the March 1, 2008 tragedy started from the Liberty Square.

Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan appealed to the citizens today and announced: “In the fight against illegalities, violations of rights, abuses, disclosure of crimes committed by the ruling elite we will inevitably win, because the people and the government are united, and such unity is invincible and frivolous.

And to express our unity, our commitment to justice, legality, democracy, and rights protection today, at 18:30, I invite all of you to march from Liberty Square to Myasnikyan statue. We will pay tribute to this March 1 victims of all political killings and we will say no to all violence, injustice, illegality, corruption, fraud and violation of rights,” he said.

The participants marched through Liberty Square-Mashtots Avenue-Gr. Illuminator route to Myasnikyan Statue. Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, a number of state and political figures, citizens bowed down and burned their candles at the monument in memory of the victims of the March 1 tragic events.

It should be reminded that on February 19, 2008 presidential elections were held in Armenia, and since that day till the March 1 events, supporters of the first president of Armenia Levon Ter-Petrossian were holding round-the-clock demonstrations and rallies at the Liberty Square,.

On the night of March 1 to March 2, 2008, 10 civilians were killed in clashes between police and protesters in the center of Yerevan, 8 of which were demonstrators and two policemen.
