Vazgen Sargsyan would have been 54…

Today is the 54th anniversary of the First Defense Minister and a former Prime Minister, Vazgen Sargsyan․

 

Vazgen Sargsyan considered that not any economic program, government or external support can support the country to revive if each person of the country would not have the feeling of responsibility of a master or a servant towards his own country.

 

“Revolution shall be in our souls and ideas, or the programs and governments shall change one another but things shall not get forward an inch.”

 

Each  country must have Each country shall have at least 20-30 high ranking officials that are devoted to their work and who consider the state interest higher than their own interests.

 

No program may be a success and be realized if there is no belief or solidarity to achieve the goal, if each person in the country believes that the faith of the country depends on one person and that one person is he. If the person is not confident that we shall build our home. And at least it is worth to light one candle than to complaint from the darkness.

 

Let’s help everyone to light his candle and I believe Armenia shall be in light in the nearest future,” Vazgen Sargsyan said in his speech in the National Assembly.

 

Vazgen Sargsyan was born on the 5th of March 1959 in village Ararat of Ararat region of Armenia. After school he graduated from Armenian State Institute of Physical Culture in 1979.

 

In 1979-1983 worked as a teacher in the secondary school of his native village.
In 1983-1987 he led the Young Communists League of the cement factory in Ararat.
He started the active public life as a writer publicist.
He joined the Writers Union of Armenia in 1985
In 1987-1990 was the head of publicist department of “Garun” Journal.
In 1987 he was awarded the Price of the Young Communists League of Armenia for the book “Challenge with Bread.”

 

The Artsakh Liberation War was crucial for Vazgen Sargsyan’s future.

 

He was in the head of the Freedom Fighters since the first day of the movement as one of the leaders and organizers of Artsakh Freedom Fight.

 

In 1990-1991 he joined the freedom fighters’ detachments.  He was elected to the Armenian parliament in the 1990 elections; he became a member of the Internal Affairs and State Defense Committee.

 

He has a great input in the protection of the Armenian country and its borders from the enemy and in the victory of the sons of Armenia in the battle fields.

 

He had contributed to the building of the Armenian State as well.

 

He was one of the main organizers of the Armenian National Army.

 

One of the main features of his character was fidelity, which was best seen in the activities of the creation of the Army.

 

Vazgen Sargsyan was a unique individual who organized unification of the military officers and Yerkrapah. He transferred his state orientated thinking to the people who came from different layers of the population.

 

In 1991–1993 he was Defense Minister of Armenia; in 1993–1995 he was State Minister in Charge of Defense. In 1995-198 during the restructuring of government ministries, he again became Defense Minister.

 

In 1993 he organized the “Yerkrapah Voluntary Union” and was elected its President.

 

In 1998 he was awarded the tile of the “Hero of Artsakh” and the Order of the Golden Eagle.

 

In 1999 he again came to the political field and led the Republican Party, further became a co-president of “Miasnutyun” Union. In June 1999 he was appointed Prime-Minister of the RA, and showed himself as a talented leader.

 

Vazgen Sargsyan was assassinated on the 27th of October 1999 in result of a terrorist act in the National Assembly of the Republic of Armenia. He was posthumously awarded the title of the National Hero of Armenia and the order “Fatherland” in December 1999.
