Armenia officially joined the International Criminal Court today. The Rome Statute enters into force on 1 February.
On 24 March, 2023, the Constitutional Court published the final part of the decision on determining the conformity of the obligations set forth in the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court (statute) signed on 17 July, 1998, to the Constitution.
On 3 October, the Armenian Parliament ratified the Rome Statute with only 60 votes “in favor” of the ruling “Civil Contract”, and President Vahagn Khachatryan signed it on 14 October, after which the Minister of Foreign Affairs informed the Criminal Court about it.
About two hours after the vote of the National Assembly, the Kremlin announced that the ratification of the Rome Statute was not the right step from the point of view of bilateral relations. Yerevan, for its part, announced that by joining the Rome Statute, it wants to hold Azerbaijan accountable for war crimes.
Yerevan is also talking about the possibility of submitting a lawsuit against Azerbaijan to the International Criminal Court for the deportation of Artsakh Armenians.
