Russian President Vladimir Putin stated that there is no turnaround in Russian-Armenian relations. “Interfax” reports.
“I do not think there is any kind of reversal, we see, we understand what is happening,” Putin said at a plenary session of the Eastern Economic Forum, commenting on the latest developments in bilateral relations with Armenia, which many characterize as a crisis and a reversal.
Regarding the current situation in the Karabakh conflict zone, Putin noted that the situation has changed dramatically after the Armenian leadership officially recognized the sovereignty of Baku over Nagorno-Karabakh.
“If Armenia itself recognized that Karabakh is part of Azerbaijan, what should we do?” – the President said.
At the same time, he admitted that other issues remain unresolved, including those of a humanitarian nature, the problem of the security of the Karabakh Armenians, as well as the mandate of the Russian peacekeepers.
“Of course, other issues arise here related to the humanitarian component and the mandate of our peacekeepers. The mandate is still valid, but issues of a humanitarian nature, preventing any kind of ethnic cleansing there, of course, have not gone away, and I completely agree with this,” – Putin noted.
He emphasized: “I hope that the Azerbaijani leadership, as we have always been told and are still being told, is not interested in any kind of ethnic cleansing. Moreover, on the contrary, it is interested in this process (conflict resolution – IF) happened softly.”
When asked by the moderator whether he had recently spoken with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, Putin replied: “He sent me a detailed letter, we are in contact, we have no problems with Armenia, and there are no problems with Prime Minister Pashinyan. We are in constant contact with him.”
