Earlier, the President of the Republic of South Ossetia Anatoly Bibilov announced that the republic will take legal steps to join the Russian Federation in the near future.
It should be noted that after Georgia’s armed aggression against Tskhinvali on 26 August, 2008, Russia recognized the sovereignty of South Ossetia and Abkhazia. Russian leaders have repeatedly stated that the recognition of the independence of the two former Georgian autonomies reflects the existing realities and is not subject to review. However, Tbilisi refuses to recognize the independence of the republics.
