NATO on deployment of armed forces in Ukraine

NATO countries are united in the decision not to deploy troops in Ukraine or in the skies over Ukraine in order to prevent an armed conflict between the alliance and Russia. This was announced on Wednesday at a press conference by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg.  TASS News Agency reports.

“[NATO] allies are unanimous that NATO should not deploy forces in Ukraine or in the sky above it, because we are responsible for ensuring that this conflict does not spread beyond Ukraine,” the secretary general said.

According to him, NATO member countries see the humanitarian crisis associated with the current situation, and understand that a direct military clash between Russia and NATO will lead to larger and more devastating consequences.

He also added that the alliance does not plan to deploy peacekeeping activities on the territory of Ukraine.

It should be reminded that early in the morning of 24 February, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the launch of a special military operation in Ukraine, aimed at ensuring the security of the Donetsk and Luhansk republics, as well as removing the “Nazi regime” in Ukraine.

The US and the EU have assessed Russia’s move as a direct aggression by Russia against Ukraine’s territorial integrity and sovereignty.

The Verkhovna Rada has declared martial law in Ukraine.
