Zelensky signed an application for Ukraine’s membership in the EU

President Volodymyr Zelensky signed an application for Ukraine’s membership in the European Union. Deputy Head of the OP Andrei Sibiga informed, Украинская правда reports.

“President of Ukraine V. Zelensky has just signed a historic document – an application for Ukraine’s membership in the European Union. Together with the head of the Verkhovna Rada, R. Stefanchuk, and the country’s Prime Minister, D. Shmyhal, a Joint Statement was also signed. The documents are already on their way to Brussels.” Andrei Sibiga wrote

According to the procedure, an application for EU membership must be sent to the Presidency of the Council of the European Union.

The Council is currently chaired by France. The procedure for considering Ukraine’s application may be important for President Zelensky, given that this issue could potentially be used in negotiations with the Russian Federation, since the European Union is a project based on peace and conflict resolution through dialogue.

It should be noted that on the morning of February 28, President Volodymyr Zelensky appealed to the European Union regarding the accession of Ukraine for a special procedure.

According to him, Ukrainians deserve EU membership. Following the Russian invasion, several EU countries called for Ukraine to be given the prospect of membership, and Slovakia proposed  the creation of a special procedure  for Ukraine to join the EU. The day before, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said she considers Ukraine “one of us” and wants to see it in the EU. Despite this, she did not specify what are the chances of Ukraine to join the EU, especially under the accelerated program.

EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell said that Ukraine has a clearly European perspective, but  now “we must fight aggression”.
