On Sunday, Istanbul’s prosecutor’s office launched an investigation into social media users who posted offensive messages in response to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s claim that he was infected with the “Omicron” strain of coronavirus. TASS news agency reported.
According to the NTV channel, at least one suspect has already been detained in the Bagcilar district of Istanbul. He is accused of publishing provocative and offensive content sufficient to constitute a crime.
Currently, Tirkey has a law on insulting the president, according to which a person can be held criminally liable. This violation is punishable by a prison term of one to four years.
The day before, Erdoğan announced on his social networks that he had was infected with omicron strain. According to him, the disease proceeds in a mild form. According to Turkish Health Minister, the disease does not prevent the president from continuing his work.
