A Country where Happiness is enshrined in the Constitution

Bhutan is a country in South Asia, between India and China. About 2.2 million people live in the country. Their motto is “Happiness is a place”.

Iravaban.net has studied the legal side of the idea of being happy in the country. This is enshrined in the Constitution of Bhutan, which was adopted in 2008.

Article 9 of the Constitution, which states the principles of state policy, states, “The State shall strive to promote those conditions that will enable the pursuit of Gross National Happiness.”

This is not the only mentioning of happiness. Article 20 states that “The Government shall protect and strengthen the sovereignty of the Kingdom, provide good governance, and ensure peace, security, well-being and happiness of the people.”

Bhutan’s national anthem also mentions happiness: “May the sun of peace and happiness shine over all people.”
