Russia is in touch both with Azerbaijan and Armenia in order to calm down the situation. Spokesperson of the Russian Foreign Minister Maria Zakharova stated.
“Russian President Vladimir Putin had a telephone conversation with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan yesterday. Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu had a telephone conversation with his Azerbaijani and Armenian counterparts. As a result of these mediation efforts, the clashes were stopped last night. Working together continues to ease tensions. We call on both sides to show restraint, to prevent new incidents, to resolve all disputes exclusively through political and diplomatic means,” she said.
According to her, the recent events confirm the possibility of an early start of the demarcation process, the launch of a joint commission on the demarcation of the Armenian-Azerbaijani border, based on previously submitted Russian proposals.
Questions were also raised about the provisions of the Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation, Mutual Assistance between the Russian Federation and the Republic of Armenia of 29 August, 1997, as well as the possibility of using the CSTO mechanisms, to which Zakharova replied: “Russia takes both bilateral and multilateral obligations seriously. Relevant bilateral consultations are held. As for the Collective Security Treaty Organization, according to our information, they are closely following the situation on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border.”
