Moscow has offered assistance to Yerevan and Baku in demarcating the border

Russia has offered to mediate in discussing the demarcation of Armenia and Azerbaijan. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov stated.

RIA Novosti reported.

“By preliminary agreement between the parties, the Russian Federation offered to assist in the beginning and implementation of delimitation and demarcation of the border,” the diplomat said.

In his words, Moscow will act as an advisor to the Armenian-Azerbaijani special commission, which will solve these problems.

The Armenian Ministry of Defense has previously stated that the Azerbaijani Armed Forces tried to carry out certain work “to clarify the borders” in one of the border areas of Syunik region. Moreover, the department did not specify what was discussed. Security in some parts of the road in Syunik region is provided by Russian border guards. According to the agreements, they control the traffic on the Goris-David Bek and Goris-Kapan roads, which pass through problematic areas.

Before the Russian troops were there, the sides clarified the locations of the temporary combat positions. As the Armenian Foreign Ministry explained, it was necessary after the demarcation of a part of the border with Azerbaijan, when a number of territories that were formerly part of the Nagorno Karabakh Republic came under the control of Baku.

Residents of the area believe that the deployment of new Azerbaijani military positions threatens their security. The Prime Minister of the Republic of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan stated that the processes taking place on the border with Azerbaijan cannot be considered as demarcation, they only clarify the location of certain border points.
