We are ready to support them։ Lavrov about the situation in Syunik

Russia sees no reason to “sharpen emotions” because of the situation in Syunik. Moscow is ready to assist Yerevan and Baku in the issue of demarcation, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said today, May 17.

“RIA Novosti” news agency reported.

“Not a single shot was fired, no clashes took place there. We sat down, calmly began to agree on how to defuse this situation. They asked us for assistance, our military provided such assistance, an agreement was reached. I see no reason for stir up emotions in this not routine, but calmly settled issue,” Lavrov said.

“As for the situation on the Azerbaijani-Armenian border, the Azerbaijani side, after the incident occurred, made statements explaining the misunderstanding and, most importantly, the absence of a border that would be delimited and demarcated. Nobody has ever dealt with this, and we proposed to the parties, so that they begin such work, we are ready to assist them in this, providing both cartographic material and consulting services, “the Russian minister added.

It should be reminded that on 12 May, some groups of servicemen of the Azerbaijani Armed Forces crossed the state border of Armenia and took actions to enclose Sev Lich (Black Lake). The Armenian Armed Forces carried out tactical counterattacks.

The Azeris stationed in some adjacent areas withdrew from the occupied territories as a result of tactical counterattacks by the Armenian armed forces. No case of using firearms or other weapons has been reported by the Armenian or Azerbaijani armed forces so far. At the same time, about 250 members of the Azerbaijani Armed Forces continue to be inside the state borders of the Republic of Armenia in some parts of Syunik and Gegharkunik regions.
