When will the election of the Prime Minister take place in the parliament? Terms defined by the Constitution

On 25 April, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan resigned.

According to Article 149 of the Constitution, in cases the Prime Minister submits a resignation or in other cases of the office of the Prime Minister becoming vacant, the factions of the National Assembly shall be entitled to nominate candidates for Prime Minister within a period of seven days after accepting the resignation of the Government. The National Assembly shall elect the Prime Minister by majority of votes of the total number of Deputies.

That is, the first sitting must be convened no later than 3 May.

According to the same article, in case Prime Minister is not elected, a new election of Prime Minister shall be held seven days after voting, wherein the candidates for Prime Minister nominated by at least one third of the total number of Deputies shall be entitled to participate.

In this case, the special sitting of the National Assembly must take place on 10 May at the latest.

In case Prime Minister is not elected by majority of votes of the total number of Deputies, the National Assembly shall be dissolved by virtue of law.

According to Article 92 of the Constitution, extraordinary elections to the National Assembly shall be held not earlier than 30 (thirty) and not later than 45 (forty-five) days after the dissolution of the National Assembly.

Additionally according to Article 93 of the Constitution, Regular and extraordinary elections to the National Assembly shall be called by the President of the Republic.
