The President of Georgia is not going to resign

Georgian President Salome Zurabishvili announced after the decision of the Constitutional Court that she is not going to resign, RIA Novosti reports. The Constitutional Court of Georgia confirmed on 16 October, that President Salome Zurabishvili violated the main law of the country. During her working visits abroad on 31 August, 1 September and 6 September, 2023, she performed representative functions in the field of international relations without the consent of the Government of Georgia, thereby violating Article 52 of the Constitution of Georgia. The ruling “Georgian Dream” Party previously presented the claim.

The court’s decision still needs to be approved by the Parliament with the votes of 100 deputies. The parliamentary majority has 84 votes out of 150. If the Parliament approves the decision of the Constitutional Court, the President will be considered removed from office by impeachment.

“I want to tell you that I am not going anywhere, I am not resigning. I will be where I am now and have been all my life, that is why I came here, I stood on the street for the sake of our European and democratic future,” Zurabishvili stated during the briefing.
