Crisis of the People’s Deputies and the Supreme Council of Russia

20 years ago, on 3 October 1993, Russia faced a new revolution, which was the result of constitutional crisis that had started in 1992. Each of the conflicting parties: the President and the Supreme Council were trying to declare illegal its counterpart. The developments led to armed skirmishes in the Moscow streets, which according to different sources cause around 140 – 160 human losses and over 300 were wounded.

On 4 October the tanks opened the fire at the White House. Boris Yeltsin de facto continued to carry out the duties of the President and on 4 October dispersed the Congress and the Supreme Council with use of weapons and tanks.
