“Many of the fines referring to the road traffic in the Administrative Offence Code do not work,” Edward Hovhannisyan, the President of Achilles Center for Protection of Drivers’ Rights” NGO thinks.
Speaking about other shortcomings of the road traffic system Mr Hovhannisyan said:
“The road traffic management in Armenia is on a low level. The road signs and marking requirements contradict each other. Traffic lights are not installed in accordance with the government’s decision. Crosswalk markings are at the crossroads segments, as if seeming to invite pedestrians to fall under the car. This is inadmissible,” he said.
He also stressed that on the roads with 3 or more lanes speed limit signs should be placed on the left side of the road as well, “And not only the right side, because the sign may be closed by other vehicles, and the driver may not see the sign. The same refers to the traffic lights that are installed on the right side of the road. Many citizens apply to us with complaints that they cannot see the traffic lights on the roads with 4 lines as the lights are installed on the right side only. When they pass under the red light, the camera records it, but no one considers the fact that traffic light is installed incorrectly.” The NGO President concluded.
