The Court of Cassation has accepted the appeals submitted by two defense attorneys of former Chairman of the RA Urban Development Committee Vahagn Vermishyan – Alexander Kochubayev and Mnatsakan Shahgaldyan.
In conversation with Iravaban.net, attorney Alexander Kochubayev stated that this is an important step toward completely eliminating the massive violations of Vahagn Vermishyan’s rights: “One important point to note is when the Court of Cassation accepts a case for proceedings. This is such a court that doesn’t automatically accept cases – either there must be an issue of uniform application of the law, a distortion of the very essence of justice, or an issue of legal development.”
The attorney noted that the prosecutor had also filed a cassation appeal, which was not accepted: “We are hopeful that the Court of Cassation will be an effective remedy, and we won’t have to go to the European Court seeking justice. Now only one question is being discussed – whether to acquit Vahagn Vermishyan or not.”
