Within the framework of the “Church and Law” interview series, Iravaban.net talked with Father Mkhitar Aharonyan, the spiritual shepherd of the Tegher Parish of the Aragatsotn Diocese, on the topic of “Spiritual Crisis.” According to him, spiritual crisis arises in those people who, first and foremost, do not recognize their identity, do not recognize the heritage left by their ancestors.
“The Armenian Apostolic Church is the main actor in preserving the nation. The spiritual mother of the nation is the Armenian Apostolic Church, especially in the life of the Armenian people, both in Armenia and the diaspora. No matter how much we turn around, we will see that the Armenian person chooses the church as a meeting place for all occasions, happy or sad. We want to find without searching, we want it to open without knocking,” he says.
The clergyman notes that when he was newly appointed as the spiritual shepherd of the Tegher Parish, only one or two people would visit the monastery, but now there is a large crowd there.
“Living without Christ means living only for the body, living only to eat. The human being consists of two essences—whether we believe it or not, whether we accept it or not, it is undeniable—body and soul. Just as your body wants to be nourished, so does your soul.
The food of the body is bread, the food of the mind is the book, and the food of the soul is prayer and holy communion. If you are not in Christ, you are already in spiritual crisis,” he says and urges never to be cut off from your roots.
