For the sculptor, art begins with play; art itself is a game, affirms sculptor Arman Hambardzumyan, insisting that when you sculpt, you fall into euphoria, and that process is a very pleasant, impactful phenomenon.
“After that game, most importantly, you leave behind an enduring value, when you look back and realize you were engaged in something worthwhile. Everything comes from childhood, the richer and more multifaceted life you have lived… it’s connected with travels, impressions, multilayered reading,” says the sculptor.
In his conviction, the richer childhood you have lived—filled with play, dreams, and imagination—the more substantive your art becomes. Every scene, every detail, from the smell of wood to the night moon, becomes material for sculpture.
At first, you simply play with forms, materials and thoughts. And it is during this very play that reality is born. Then comes the moment when you stand before the completed sculpture, look back, and think: I left myself in this stone.
At that moment, you understand—this is not merely a form. This is an enduring value, something that will remain even after you are gone, a thought embodied in stone. It is a silent conversation with time.
The eleventh part of the “Mystery of Creation” video series, implemented within the framework of the “ZArt” cultural project, which is carried out by Iravaban.net, opens doors to a world where art is not a final result, but a journey, a game, and self-discovery.
“ZArt” has a special mission: to build a bridge between art and society. The project aims to present Armenian artists and their exceptional works not only to Armenian society but also to the diaspora and abroad, contributing to the popularization of art and the recognition of artists. Through this series of videos, society comes closer to art, and artists to society, creating a beautiful space of cultural mutual understanding.
“Feeling and thought dominate in parallel, and it’s very important that they work together. As Kochar says, a good master should also be a good painter, and they should work together. A sculptor cannot not be a painter; it’s all connected with feeling, and vice versa, when that feeling is lacking, you cannot depict that depth,” notes Arman Hambardzumyan.
