The presidency of the European Council may temporarily pass to Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán after the resignation of the Head of the body, Charles Michel, as the country will hold the presidency of the European Council from July to December 2024. American newspaper Politico writes.
“Michel is scheduled to take his seat in the European Parliament in mid-July, if elected, which means EU leaders need to quickly agree on a successor to his vacated position in the Council. If this fails, then the meetings will be chaired by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, whose country will take over the presidency of the EU Council on a rotating basis in July.
“Orban’s “unbridled leadership” of the European Council in the six months immediately following the 2024 European elections is something many other EU-26 leaders would be desperate to avoid,” the newspaper said.
