Expulsion from Latvia threatens 1,167 citizens of the Russian Federation who have not fulfilled the requirements of amendments to the immigration law and have not submitted documents to obtain a residence permit in the country. “TASS” informs.
“The process of deporting Russians from Latvia promises to be complex and burdensome,” the message quotes the words of Maira Rose, the Chairwoman of the Latvian Office of Citizenship and Migration Affairs,.
She noted that, according to the collected data, this will affect 1,167 citizens of the Russian Federation. Most of them – 789 people – are over 60 years old.
In September 2022, the Seimas (parliament) of Latvia adopted amendments to the migration law, which obligated Russian citizens permanently living in the republic to obtain a certificate of proficiency in the Latvian language at level A2 by 1 September, 2023. If the exam is ignored, their permanent residence permits will be revoked. After this, more than 3 thousand Russians received letters from the authorities warning about the expiration of their permanent residence permit.
