On 17 November, the Swedish Parliament accepted the constitutional amendment that Turkey demanded for NATO membership. 278 out of 349 MPs voted in favor of the amendment proposal, which envisages tightening the laws on combating terrorism.
Under the laws of Sweden, it was not enough to initiate a criminal case against a person just for dealing with terrorist groups. Now, after the new bill, that process has been simplified.
The change will come into force on 1 January, 2023.
Let’s remind that the first foreign visit of the newly appointed Prime Minister of Sweden, Ulf Kristersson, was to Turkey in November of this year, during which he met with President Erdoğan and discussed a number of bilateral issues, as well as membership of Sweden to NATO.
