The Federal Assembly of Germany on Sunday re-elected Social Democrat Frank-Walter Steinmeier as President for a second five-year term, said Bundestag Speaker Bärbel Bas, who chaired the Federal Assembly. RIA Novosti reported.
Steinmeier’s re-election was expected. His candidacy was supported by the parties of the ruling coalition, as well as the opposition bloc of Christian Democratic and Christian Social Unions. The small parties nominated their candidates, but their chances of being elected were not considered serious.
Steinmeier has been Germany’s President since 19 March, 2017, when he replaced Joachim Gauck.
