Before the government sitting today, on 29 July, the acting Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan referred to the tense situation on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border.
“Dear colleagues, dear compatriots, despite the efforts of the Armenian government and the international community, the situation is not stabilizing along the Armenian-Azerbaijani border. Azerbaijan continues to use aggressive rhetoric and actions, at the same time leaving unanswered all the proposals of the international community for a long-term political settlement of the situation. As such, I would like to reiterate the statement made by the OSCE Minsk Group Co-Chairs, for example, on 13 April, urging the parties to resume high-level political dialogue under the auspices of the Co-Chairs at the earliest opportunity. I would like to remind that so far Azerbaijan has not responded to this call, while Armenia has repeatedly stressed its readiness to start the negotiation process at any time in the proposed format.”
According to the acting Prime Minister of the Republic of Armenia, Azerbaijan is violating the agreements reached. He stated that just as Armenia should have communication through the territory of Azerbaijan to Russia, Central Asia, Iran, in the same way Azerbaijan should have communication through the territory of Armenia, including to Nakhichevan, Georgia, Iran.
“In order to implement this program, customs points must be set up at the relevant border points, the crossing of which must be done from both sides internationally, for example, in accordance with the rules established in the CIS, with other types of customs border controls,” he said.
Nikol Pashinyan also spoke about the CSTO. As a member of the CSTO, Armenia will assume the chairmanship of the organization in September. Armenia understands its responsibility not to pose security threats to the CSTO, not to involve allied countries in military operations. “I officially rule out any provocative action by the RA Armed Forces. At the same time, I think that one of the possible solutions to find out the truth of our mutual accusations from Azerbaijan is the deployment of the CSTO monitoring mission along the Armenian-Azerbaijani border, which is envisaged by the CSTO legal regulations. In the impossibility of carrying out such a mission within the CSTO, there may be other internationally acceptable formats for us, including the OSCE Minsk Group co-chairing.”
