0.25% of the Georgian population is in prison

As of 1 June, 9.2 thousand prisoners were serving sentences in Georgian prisons. Overall, 0.25% of Georgia’s population is incarcerated. Most of the prisoners are adults, and there are only 327 women in Georgian prisons.

This is not the first sentence for 2.8 thousand prisoners. Most of the prisoners are men between the ages of 26 and 50. In addition, there are 86 people over the age of 70 in Georgian prisons. 53 juveniles are serving sentences, four of whom are girls.

Most of the convicts serve their sentences in three prisons.

3.2 thousand convicts are serving sentences especially for serious crimes. Another 3.2 thousand were convicted of serious crimes. Most of the convicts are Georgian citizens, there are 536 stateless foreigners. Most convicts are from Turkey, Azerbaijan and the Russian Federation.

Some prisoners in Georgia may work. 415 prisoners work in prisons, another 54 are engaged in individual activities, 161 in enterprises. Prisoners receive a monthly salary for their work, which they can transfer to their families or spend in prison shops for necessities.

Georgian prisons reward prisoners for good behavior through a variety of methods, including additional visits and telephone calls.
