Ilham Aliyev is waiting for Armenia’s response to his call

On 2 June, the President of the Council of the European Union Charles Michel called the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev.

During the meeting, they expressed satisfaction with the development of cooperation between Azerbaijan and the European Union. Both sides noted that they greatly appreciate this cooperation.

The President of the Council of the European Union Charles Michel expressed readiness to support the launch of the border demarcation process between Azerbaijan and Armenia. He called on both sides to cooperate in full transparency on captives, demining and other humanitarian issues.

President Ilham Aliyev noted that Azerbaijan is ready to start negotiations for a peace agreement with Armenia, but Armenia has not yet responded to that call. The EU Council President Charles Michel called on both sides to negotiate in a constructive atmosphere.

During the telephone conversation, both sides expressed interest in ensuring peace and security in the South Caucasus.

Notably, earlier today the acting Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, who is in Brussels on a working visit, met with Charles Michel.

The Acting Prime Minister provided details on the situation in the South Caucasus after the 44-day Artsakh war, in particular, on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border. Nikol Pashinyan stressed the need for the representatives of the Azerbaijani Armed Forces to leave the sovereign territory of Armenia, provided information on the diplomatic and negotiation actions in that direction, as well as on his proposal to resolve the situation at the 27 May sitting of the RA Security Council.

The President of the European Council welcomed the position of the Armenian side on the peaceful, political solution of the problem on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border and expressed the EU readiness to support that process.
