If we had not learned lessons from the April War, this 44-day heroic battle would have had a different outcome and in different terms: Artak Davtyan

Today, on 2 April, high-ranking officials visit “Yerablur” military pantheon to pay tribute to the memory of the victims of the April 2016 hostilities.

“We mourn, we are proud of our brave servicemen, who were martyred for the sake of the homeland during the April Four-Day War, and during the 44-day war. Of course, if we had not learned lessons from April War, the heroic battle of these 44 days, I think, would have had a different outcome and in other terms,” the Chief of General Staff of the RA Armed Forces Artak Davtyan said in a conversation with journalists.

In response to the question whether it could have had a more tragic end, Davtyan mentioned, “First, we could have completely lost Artsakh. Second, it could be done in 15-20 days. That is the result.”

Artak Davtyan mentioned that the 4-day military operations should not be qualified as a war in the classical sense.

Speaking about the situation around the General Staff, Artak Davtyan said that the situation in the General Staff is already resolved, that there is no problem, normal work is going on. “The decision of the court and the comment is the job of the lawyers, who make a comment in each case,” he said.

Artak Davtyan did not answer the question whether Iskander was used during the Second Artsakh War or not, noting that it is not subject to publication.

Notably, in 2016, on the morning of 2 April, at 8:18, the Artsakh Defense Army issued a statement. On the night of 1 April,  the enemy launched open offensive operations in the southern, southeastern and northeastern directions of the line of contact, using artillery, armored vehicles and air power together with other weapons. A verbal ceasefire agreement was reached on 5 April.
